Are robots and AI replacing humans? It is hard not to ask this question when you visit a city and a Waymo drives by with passengers. The seatbelt is buckled around a driver who is missing. I have witnessed the shift from taxis to Uber and Lyft and now the shift to driverless cars. On the same block that I see a Waymo, I walk by a robot delivering food that used to be delivered by individuals on foot, bikes or cars. Some people question whether this is progress.
I look at the art of the possible and to see robots, AI, and technology as something that transforms and enables more than it eliminates. I see the good and what more can be done, than having a glass half empty view. Yes, robots, AI, and technology innovations introduce upheaval for our visual world, how we might have imagined things, or how we think things should be. Robots, AI, and technology are here to stay. You might not want the rapid change that we are seeing, but I invite everyone to embrace the journey.
Robots, Waymos, and AI do not mean that the world is ending, but these technology shifts are reshaping the workforce. In a recent Duke Fuqua Insights Podcast, "Is AI Replacing or Reshaping Jobs?" Professor John Graham of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business discussed findings from The CFO Survey, conducted quarterly as a collaborative effort between Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond and Atlanta.
The latest survey data reveals that AI is poised to boost worker productivity by up to 3% in 2026 without triggering significant layoffs. AI represents an incredible opportunity for small businesses rather than a threat. Small business owners can leverage AI solutions to scale their businesses by automating tasks and gaining insights to make data-driven decisions. AI provides the promise of giving employees more time to focus on customer satisfaction and innovation. Small business growth in the AI era relies on pairing automated efficiency with human critical thinking, communication, and strategic oversight.
